Afternoon of Support, Education & Hope-July 15, 2012

The Iowa SIDS Foundation hosted an afternoon at Iowa State University's Reiman Gardens featuring guest speaker, Chris Klug, MA, M.Div., CT.  Chris is a grief counselor in private practice in Iowa City.  He is Certified in Thanatology: Death Dying and Bereavement through the Association for Death Education and Counseling.  Chris was a grief counselor and the Bereavement Coordinator at Iowa City Hospice from 1997 to 2008.  He is a consultant to the Palliative Care staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and teaches Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction through the Deparmtent of Psychiatry at UIHC.

Chris discussed validating feelings while acknowledging facts, grief and loss and how it affects one's identity, various grieving styles, children's grief, staying connected to the one who has died, and viewing grief as a healthy/healing process rather than 'something is wrong with me.'

Families spent the afternoon with Chris, visiting the Lego sculptures, and visiting with others during a brief reception.  We extend our deepest appreciation to those families that were able to join us for the afternoon.

Feedback from the afternoon:
"It was wonderful.  Would like to be able to have more time."
"Very helpful, informative. I know it's ok to feel what I feel and there's not a specific time to stop feeling what I feel."
"Excellent!  One of the best speakers I've ever heard.  Everything was well planned, and set up."
"Chris Klug--wonderful!"
